It is easier to break down a kitchen renovation schedule into smaller steps. You can see the whole picture and create a schedule that suits you. Although there are many ways to interpret a kitchen remodeling timeline, Prime Cabinetry has found this breakdown to be the most efficient.
Below is a quick overview of how a kitchen remodels looks from start to finish. To provide as much detail as possible, we simplified it into six phases.
Two of the most important questions associated with any project are: How much will it cost? What is the time frame? In our article How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost? we discussed the costs of a kitchen remodeling project. Now let’s talk about the time it will take.
There are many moving parts to a kitchen renovation. You need to plan your actions, organize, and get help from others. You can keep your group productive and costs down by organizing, whether you have friends to assist or you are hiring a professional. This is just a summary. Your timeline will vary depending on how involved you are in the kitchen.
Phase 1: Budgeting & Planning
During phase 1, you will need to decide on your layout, budget, and design preferences. This phase is not difficult and can be completed at your own pace.
Select Your Layout
The layout of your kitchen will ultimately determine its functionality and flow. It should make sense, and offer the possibility for design changes. Prime Cabinetry designers can help you make the right decisions, regardless of whether you have to work within a set budget or with a blank slate. Define Your Design Preferences
As mentioned previously, determining your design style can be a fun and essential part of a kitchen remodeling project. It is both time-saving and economical to plan your overall design style. These questions are important to consider when designing your kitchen, whether you’re remodeling your permanent home or renting.
- What length of time do you intend to stay in your home?
- Are you going to hire someone or do it yourself?
- Are you planning to make any architectural changes?
- What are the comparable improvements for your home?
- Do you want to invest in high-quality cabinetry?
HGTV recently stated that cabinets should be one the largest investments in a kitchen, even if it is a rental property. Talk to a Prime Cabinetry Kitchen Designer about the cabinets that you might consider for your kitchen remodel.
After you have chosen your design, take some photos of your kitchen and start planning the final reveal. After and before photos are a great way for you to look back on all your hard work and inspire others.
Set Your Budget
Planning a kitchen remodel is only possible if you know your budget. If you want to keep your eyes on the bigger picture while staying on track with the details, it is essential. Prime Cabinetry recognizes some common practices that homeowners can use to evaluate their project goals, timelines, and costs.
If you are planning to work for several days during your kitchen remodel we recommend scheduling your delivery dates. You can ask each vendor about their lead times and plan your other schedules once you have an established delivery date.
Phase 2: Ordering
Phase two will see you place orders for cabinets, countertops, and flooring as well as backsplash and hardware.
Planning and order go hand in hand because they require scheduling. It is a good idea to designate a person in your team to handle lead times and delivery dates of all products.
The second phase can take anywhere from 1-2 months to shop for, select and order everything. However, it is possible to get the job done in as little as 1-to 2 business days if you know exactly what you need.
Cabinets generally take the longest time to deliver than other kitchen products. It is best to order early so that you can be flexible in the event of an issue or delay. Your project timeline will benefit from a cushioning of expected lead times and deadlines.
Our customers typically spend about 1-2 weeks selecting cabinets and arranging their layouts with our design team. After placing an order, unassembled stock cupboards are shipped within 7-10 business days, and assembled stock cabinets in 3-4 weeks. Semi-custom cabinets may take up to 4 weeks to deliver depending on the level of customization.
Cabinet lead times can vary depending on where you live and what order you place. Plan your kitchen remodel around this lead time. Contact Prime Cabinetry for the most accurate lead time and door style information before you order.
Phase 3: Demolition
During the third phase, you will remove your cabinets, countertops, and appliances and complete structural demolition.
According to what we know so far, you should be able to live without a kitchen for at least one month. Before you begin demolition, take all of your belongings out of the cabinets and countertops and set up a temporary kitchen to serve as a temporary kitchen while you remodel. During construction, a temporary sink, fridge, microwave, and dishwashing machine will be helpful.
Austin Demolition Services states that two contractors can spend between three and three weeks gutting your kitchen. The number of materials that they are removing and the size of your kitchen will affect how long it takes to demo.
You should decide if you will be demoing your kitchen by yourself or hire a professional during the planning phase. To make an informed decision, read our full article Professional or DIY kitchen Renovation.
Rewiring electrical or moving to plumbing can take 2 to 3 weeks. With a single swing of the sledgehammer, your home’s age can change the course of structural changes. These jobs should not be done by amateurs.
For quick and easy cleanup, we recommend renting a roll-away container. This allows you to quickly clean up and remove large amounts of debris from your job site. Dumpters.com recommends that residential dumpsters be delivered at least 4-5 days prior to the time they are needed. After ordering, fill the container and arrange for pickup once demolition is completed.
Phase 4: Painting and Finishing
Finish the flooring and paint the ceiling. It is best to lay wood flooring before installing cabinets. Vinyl and similar materials can be fitted after the cabinets are installed. This phase can take 3-5 days depending on your project’s scope.
Consider using your paintbrush for this stage of the remodel to save money. You can save money by choosing DIY to hire a professional when you can.
Phase 5: Installation & Templating.
Phase five will see the installation of countertops and cabinets. Prime Cabinetry customers are strongly advised to hire a cabinet installation professional. We also offer great resources for DIY cabinet installation.
You can assemble and install kitchen cabinets confidently by viewing our assembly videos, or call our knowledgeable staff if you have any questions.
Depending on how experienced you are and how many cabinets you have, the assembly can take 2-3 days. After the cabinets are dried and cured for 24hrs, installation can take 2-3 days. Both can be completed in 4-7 days.
Before you start preparing for countertops, make sure that your cabinets are level. After the cabinets have been installed, the countertop manufacturer can meet you at the job site to take a hard measurement and create a template. Prime Cabinetry has a standard turnaround time of 14 business days for the creation of your template, fabrication, and installation.
Phase 6: Cleaning
During the sixth and final phase, you will remove all debris and trash. Clean up after cleaning. Make sure to inspect your vents and cabinets for any dust that might have accumulated during construction.
Clean all flat surfaces and dust between appliances. Finally, sweep the cabinets. Next, organize and unpack your pots, pans, and dishes.
Take pictures of the completed kitchen to remodel. It’s rewarding to share your photos with friends. We love to show off your final results and help you find new customers.
After the renovation is completed, please share your thoughts with Prime Cabinetry.
